EGC 2022 | Berlin, Germany

In 2022, the European Geothermal Congress (EGC) was held from 17th to 21st October at the Berlin Congress Centre, organised by EGEC in cooperation with the German Geothermal Association (BVG). More than 1,200 participants contributed to its success. Germany, a leader in geothermal energy, hosted the event, with Berlin aiming for climate neutrality by 2050.

The Berlin Congress Centre, close to Alexanderplatz, offered a spacious and modern venue, enhancing the congress experience with its extensive facilities and historical significance.

EGC 2019 | The Hague, the Netherlands

In 2019, the European Geothermal Congress (EGC) was held from 11th to 14th June at the World Forum in The Hague, The Netherlands. Organised by EGEC with Stichting Platform Geothermie, BodemenergieNL, and main sponsor EBN, the event showcased The Netherlands’ rapid geothermal growth, especially in heating. The Hague, aiming for carbon neutrality by 2040, plans multiple geothermal heating plants. The World Forum’s extensive facilities and central location made it an ideal venue.

EGC 2019 featured technical sessions, panel discussions, and networking opportunities, covering topics like geothermal production, direct use applications, and innovative technologies. The proceedings highlighted advancements in exploration, drilling, and sustainability, attracting a diverse group of industry, academic, and government stakeholders.

EGC 2016 | Strasbourg, France

The European Geothermal Congress (EGC) 2016, held at the newly renovated Strasbourg Congress and Exhibition Centre, hosted around 1000 participants. Strasbourg’s excellent transport links and modern facilities, including a 1,400 m² exhibition space, made it an ideal location. The event, supported by main sponsor ÉS Geothermie and co-hosted by the Association Française des Professionnels de la Géothermie, featured sixty exhibitors and a French-focused side event. With increasing interest in geothermal research, EGC 2016 emphasized translating research benefits into the private sector.

EGC 2013 | Pisa, Italy

EGC 2013, held in June in Pisa, attracted around 550 visitors over six days. The congress included four plenary sessions and concurrent side conferences, with dedicated spaces for poster presentations and an exhibition of 23 booths. Side events such as social gatherings and technical site visits were highly valued, enhancing professional networking and knowledge exchange.

EGC 2007 | Unterhaching (Munich), Germany

The European Geothermal Congress (EGC) 2007 took place from 30 May to 1 June 2007 in Unterhaching, near Munich. Over the course of four days, approximately 400 participants from 33 countries attended the event. The congress featured a trade exhibition and included excursions to notable geothermal projects in the region, with a highlight being the construction site of the Unterhaching power plant, which was scheduled to be connected to the grid in August 2007.

During the congress, Dr Otmar Bernhard, State Secretary at the Bavarian Ministry of the Environment, highlighted that around two-thirds of Germany’s geothermal capacity was installed in Bavaria. He emphasised that the greater Munich area had the potential to become one of the most significant geothermal hubs in Western Europe.

EGC 1999 | Basel, Switzerland

EGC1999 took place in Basel, Switzerland. This conference was a significant event in the geothermal energy sector, gathering experts, researchers, industry professionals, and policymakers from across Europe and beyond. Highlights of the EGC’99 included focus on deep geothermal energy, numerous workshops and technical sessions on geothermal exploration, drilling technology, reservoir engineering, and environmental impacts of geothermal energy production, case studies of successful projects and multiple networking opportunities.
