DeepU Final Conference

Details

  • Monday 13h-17h
  • Vortragsaal 1
  • Traditional drilling methods primarily rely on mechanical force, utilising a rotatory system to grind and crush rock – a process that can be both time-consuming and costly. To overcome these limitations, the DeepU project introduces an innovative drilling technology that harnesses the power of laser energy combined with cryogenic gas, enabling rock fracturing with unprecedented speed and precision.

UTES Symposium

Details

  • Monday 12h30-17h15
  • Vortragsaal 2
  • IEA Geothermal, GEOTHERMICA Initiative, & Geothermal IWG invite you to a symposium on underground thermal energy storage (UTES) in conjunction with the European Geothermal Congress (EGC 2025) in Zurich. The event is free of charge but registrations is necessary due to limited seating. If you have registered but can no longer attend, please notify organizers at info@geothermal-iwg.eu. This is an in-person event.

TRANSGEO Transnational Stakeholder Workshop

Details

  • Monday 14h-17h
  • Seezimmer 1A
  • The TRANSGEO project has carried out an assessment of the geothermal development potential of abandoned wells in the hydrocarbon basins of Central Europe (North German, Molasse, Vienna, and Pannonian Basins). Using a new database of over 10,000 deep hydrocarbon and other wells, it identifies and presents boreholes that are suitable for geothermal development and provide opportunities for engagement with the TRANSGEO experts, knowledge, and tools. Interested individuals and organisations from business, community, and policy sectors are invited to engage to
    •  increase awareness of well reuse and TRANSGEO’s products (such as the web-based well selection tool for identifying appropriate wells)
    • inform direct heat consumers and potential developers about wells in their area of interest with high repurpose potential, and
    • identify policy improvements that can facilitate well reuse.
During the discussion, participants are encouraged to ask questions about their interest in specific well reuse projects.

Instructor-led course: Modelling geothermal systems using FEFLOW

Details

  • Monday 10-17h
  • Seezimmer 1B
  • This in person instructor-lead, hands-on course provides you with comprehensive training in geothermal modelling using FEFLOW. The training program focuses on the modelling of shallow (near-surface) geothermal reservoirs. The course covers the necessary information and examples to model geothermal systems (e.g. open– and closed-loop systems), investigate the feasibility of a geothermal system and understand the impact on the subsurface. The workshop offers the right balance between the mathematical background and modelling workflows for near-surface systems.

Seequent’s Volsung: Model to Megawatts

Details

  • Monday 11-17h
  • Seezimmer 1C
  • A one-day, in-person workshop delivered in three sessions using a real-world pre-built model. You will get hands-on with the Volsung interface, see how conceptual Leapfrog Energy models are exported and imported, calibrate to natural state by adjusting key parameters and iterating on runs, then compete in a megawatt (MW) forecasting challenge by siting and refining a new well to maximise output.
  • Includes a practical demo of the Leapfrog Energy → Volsung hand-off.

Risk Guarantee Workshop

Details

  • Monday 13h30-17h
  • Gartensaal 1 C
  • The ‘Risk Guarantee’ workshop is part of the Transfer project, Transfer project, which will analyse in detail the financial and organisational scenarios for implementing a geological risk guarantee in Switzerland. The aim will be to discuss the key parameters for calculating the initial scenarios for implementing a Swiss risk guarantee.
  • This workshop will bring together Swiss deep geothermal project developers, representatives of the cantons, Confederation and Geothermie-Suisse.
  • This workshop is not open to the public and is by invitation only.

Greet Geo Workshop - De-risking Geothermal Investments: Strategies for SMEs & Start-ups

Details

  • Wednesday 10h30 – 11h
  • Seezimmer 1B

Agenda

  1. Welcome and context setting
  2. Presentation of the EU/national tools for de-risking
  3. Interactive exercise: Identify common barriers and recommendations to address them
  4. Group sharing and discussion: each group presents key barriers and recommendations
  5. Wrap-up and next steps

Thermocal Project Launch

Details

  • Wednesday 12h30-14h
  • Seezimmer 1A
  • The THERMOCAL vision is to carry out a systematic measurement programme – with unified sampling and analytical methodologies – of lithologies in the Caledonian terrane and underlying Precambrian basement across Scotland, Northern Ireland and Norway. Bespoke modelling of closed-loop systems will allow investigation on the impact of data on real-world geothermal engineering applications, such as Geothermal Heat Pumps – both shallow and deep.

Compass Event

Details

  • Thursday 16h30-18h
  • Seezimmer 2
    • Brief highlights of the project’s main breakthroughs
    • Drinks & light catering
    • An open space to connect and exchange

Join the final event of the COMPASS project — not as a conference session, but as a celebratory gathering with project partners, friends, and stakeholders across the geothermal innovation ecosystem. Over the past three years, the COMPASS project has tackled the toughest challenges in high-enthalpy and superhot geothermal drilling — from corrosion-resistant casing solutions to flexible cement systems and pressure relief technologies. Now, as the project nears completion, the COMPASS team invites you to discover their key results, explore future applications, and network with the people who made it all happen. This event is designed as an informal reception, featuring:

Whether you’re a researcher, project developer, policymaker, or industry innovator — come raise a glass with to the future of deep geothermal.
